CHANGES IN LATITUDE, CHANGES IN ATTITUDE With thanks to songwriter/artist Jimmy Buffett - where you go and how you feel about going there makes a ton of sense. In the halcyon days of yesteryear, I took both young people and seniors on tour. What I learned from this experience is that seniors actually have more fun, and are the least likely to be in that parallel universe called "Ugly Americans". The transition is really quite easy - but young people are more likely to be full of baloney and raging hormones - and some can't wait to show off their time-limited lifestyle and peer-induced bad manners. My basic advice is to remember one simple, pleasant truth: When you step off an airplane, boat or other conveyance in a strange land - you are no longer in control of ANYTHING - (the second Amendment stops at the border) you are a GUEST. Concentrate on being a good one - just like going to Grandmother's house for Thanksgiving Dinner. It's also good to accept the fact that things abroad will be different. That, after all is why you go traveling in the first place. If you expect everything to be just the same as it is at home - you will be disappointed. YOU CAN DRINK THE WATER! Most folks who travel with me know they'll be going to pretty civilized parts of the world - even though they don't look much like Kansas. If the folks we're visiting drink the local waters, we probably can manage it too. If there's ever a question - drink the wine! If you're a beer drinker, you will be delighted at the tasty varieties available in almost every country. (A word of caution, however. Don't try to show off your prowess as a beer drinker. Ours, by law, is kept at a dismally low alcohol content - and 'a few before dinner' in Britain will find you slumbering in the lounge instead of exclaiming over the vittles!). There's always the bottled stuff, of course - but be sure to order it 'sin gas' or it will definitely arrive 'with bubbles'. |
